My car is pretty old and I've never bothered to replace the old junky stereo system. But now my grandson is learning to drive I would like to get something. I have a feeling he will be borrowing the car! Any ideas for a mid budget system?

We can argue this all day, but I don't have an engine putting out a higher SPL than my stereo, that has to be dampened to death in my house. I don't live right next to a highway either. Some of us are so "mindful" of external noise we remove the plastic covers from light switches, power outlets and especially the metal grate over an AC where we listen to music because those things vibrate and/or reflect sound.
A 20Hz sine wave needs, if memory serves, 56 feet of room to complete a compression and rarefaction cycle. At least I was taught in college that when a wave doesn't have the space it doesn't produce the sound. Considering the school (which I left almost as soon as I got there because they screwed up a few too many "facts" for my taste) I could have been taught something that wasn't true.
Now, that said, there are probably a few people that have specially built enclosures that will get the job done, I think that is the rare exception.
Anyway, back on topic.
