Though I have never personally heard them myself. I don't think there is anything wrong with Cerwin Vega. They seem to be about the best deal out there. I think their most expensive and best pair of consumer loudspeakers are around 1200 dollars. I think they are the most reasonable brand out there for the price vs. quality.

I still have an old pair of 240watt technics and I think they sound great despite their 35-40Khz range(I grew up with them, so that is probably why)

Cerwin Vega makes something very similar, but can get down to 20Hz and is what I am considering upgrading to one of these days.

I hear they are somewhat bass heavy, which I consider an asset because you can keep things nice and lean and the speaker will do the work rather than the electronics in your amp.

I recently saw some Sony 3-way bookshelf speakers for about 80 bucks a pair that were actually much closer to a smaller floorstanding speaker in terms of size and specs. I think they actually have 8 or 10 inch woofers that get down to 40Hz if I recall correctly. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a pair myself to try them out either at the price.

I would look at the frequency range, output power, crossover frequencies and materials used. Once you decide on what you want then start looking at prices.

Another thing is to make sure that all the driverse are in the middle or "mirrored" to each other. I can almost guarantee that *I* would notice and would hate if the tweeter were situated on the left side of both speakers. Something to consider.
