Wow, that's a weird one. I've had 'em work well at one end of the band but fade at the other. That's pretty common, actually. But yours fades in the middle, then picks back up at the top of the dial, huh?

I'll bet this has something to do with IF tuning. You might do an alignment, or if you don't have a signal generator and scope, take it to a shop and have them check the IF alignment. Remember that the way a superhetrodyne radio works is to translate the (tunable) RF signal to a (fixed) IF for amplification. That way the intermediate stages can all work at a specific single frequency that the IF cans are tuned to.
