This might be in wrong post. I tried a long wire at 50foot . did not work well. Any advice on best way to run one. Ihave a old philco 11 tube . More tubes the higher but that would probaly be 160 foot. Any way to construct a antenna not going so high ?

Long wire antennas are pretty simple critters, really. The longer the better, the higher the better, the further away from objects (particularly metal) the better. You can also use a tuned antenna (of specific length) but if you're tuning shortwave, sometimes you really want a broadband general purpose longwire.
