Where can I obtain an operator's manual for the Sony Model TC-650 reel to reel tape recorder? Or does any one know what the function of the "tape lift" switch on/off is?

Have you checked StereoManuals.com?

I sent for a service manual from Vintage Texas, if I ever get it. I was wondering if there is an operators manual for it. I bought the tape recorder used, as is. It works fine, but I don't know what the tape lift function does. Thanks for the info anyway.

Usually such a switch function that affects the tape lifters on other sets is commonly called a "search" function. The tape lifters pull the tape away from the heads during fast functions such as: fast forward, rewind and pause, to prevent head wear.

A tape lifter disable is really only useful either when editing or moving the tape by hand to hear what is on the tape at a precise point; or to hear tape output during fast wind or rewind to get to a point where the program, song, or selection ends.

Hopefully Sony's implementation of the tape lifter disable switch also reduces the audio level by 10 dB or 20 dB to make sure its use doesn't inadvertently blow out the tweeters and/or woofers in your system, by applying supersonic or subsonic audio quite when at high wind speeds - at normally high audio levels... YMMV..

Thanks for the info. It makes sense. Saves on the ware of the heads during wind and rewind and frequent cleaning due to tape residue. I usually just used the counter for editing, but this would be more precise. This is the first recorder I've seen it on, that's why I didn't know what it was for. I really appreciate your response.
Thanks again.

Don't they have operators manuals there too?

No they don't. I have two service manuals now, one from Stereo Manuals & another from Vintage Texas. Neither place has the operator's manual. I would like to know how to do certain recordings (ex: sound on sound, sound with sound etc) since I bought the recorder used "as is", it didn't have the operator's manual. The recorder work's great. I have serched the internet to no avail to see if any one has the recorder for a copy or an original. Any other other ideas? Would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!
