i would like to know how to use a multimeter to check if i have a good ground and check the rest of the system.

on the multi meter take the black wire and attatch it to your cars ground wire for the cd deck. then take the red wire on the multi meter and touch the power wire. should jump really to 12v if u got good ground

You can check the ground using this link...

You can check the voltage at an amplifier by measuring across the power and ground cable. It should be around 13-14.4 volts at the amp when the car is running.
