You know it is interesting that many of our fellow citizens really don't have a clear idea of exactly what form of government we have and how this form is realised. Allow me to offer the dictionary definition of a Republic,(our form of govt.) "A Republic is a state or country that is lead by people who do not base their political power on any principal beyond the control"By The People" of that state or country." Yes it is humbling to know we as a nation control our own destiny as principals of our government. In the final analysis if we control the govt; we are the govt. Just thought I'd point that out since the Fourth of July is coming up in a few weeks.

America is a federal republic. And you're right that many don't realize that. A republic is a government that doesn't have a monarch - a king or emperor or whatever. It means the rule of the land is bound by fixed laws, not by the whim of a monarch. Other than that, there is nothing that says individuals control the government. The key feature of a republic is the lack of a monarch.
Absolutely thats one feature; the other being control of the govt by the people. At least thats why we have the priviledge of voting. According to the definition. It is really what makes a participatory government so important; that the peoples voices control their own government and their destiny. The same applies to running for office; any American over 21 of good standing can run and own any office of government; for and by the people as the Constitution says. And on the local level where we all can attend and vote on issues of importance to our communities through our local government. We the People. Good old U.S.A.
