When I was young I took a trip across country in a 1966 ford Econoline Van with all the trimmings; curtains and couches.
We had an 8-track player and 4 tapes. They were;
Jr. Walker and the All Stars,"Shotgun".
Judy Collins,?
Lee Micheals, "Do You Know What I Mean."
And The Gratefull Dead"American Beauty and Workingmans Dead"
I wasn't familiar with the Dead at that time and really didn't care for them. After one day the Judy Collins was tossed at about 75 mph.
Jr. Walker Stayed but my point is by the Fifth day we woke up in the van and put the Dead on and we went to sleep with..the Dead on. That was the soundtrack for that whole trip and we never got tired of it.
To this day I am still enamored of those LP's. Hearing certain songs I can picture the desert and the mountains; Highway 1 on the coast.
I guess that's the magic.

The songs that played in your youth are like first girlfriends, aren't they? Never forget 'em, no matter what.

Thats a fact. I am not a huge Dead fan but I like the band. My point was that they grabbed us like they did with those two tapes. I can remmember every point in every song where the track changes. Ka-Chunk! I don't know if you remember 8-Tracks.
But I can see how some worship the band the way they do.
There must be some new rock out there that is decent; where is it?
We need more current recommendations. I see a lot of repeat offenders mentioned. That is what killed audio in the early nineties, no decent tunes, just the same old audiophile compost. Anyone remmember Amanda McBroom? Or Jennifer Warnes; Famous Blue Raincoat? Boy they had staying power hah?
Grown men sitting in silence listening to that crap.
Pathetic.

I definitely remember 8 track tapes. I never liked them much because they were clunky, but I recall thinking they should sound better because of the tape speed. It was potentially a better media than cassette. But it went just like Beta did in the home video market, which was also a better technology that lost out to VHS.

Yeah; Lear invented the 8-Track system, of the jet family. You would think he could devise something more sophisticated.
Forces of marketing. See the same thing in music.
Was that a rumor I heard that you brought Cassandra Wilson's CD to your Tulsa show? If so how come you never mentioned her?
I can't say I love that diverse mix of material all the time; I wish she would get more serious and also she writes well, I bet the mukkety-mucks won't let her put that stuff on record; but that girl can sing.
She is a musician.
Are you holding out on us?

I'll check her out for sure. Thanks for the tip. I played a few songs from Jewel and some from Diana Krall. I also brought a few other female vocalists, but I don't think any of them were played. Akhilesh brought someone, and I've been meaning to ask but keep forgetting. And Barry played a CD he brought, but I wasn't in the room during that time, so sadly I missed it. I went out and got a couple of party trays of sandwiches, and I think that's when it was.
