Interesting...I have some opposite experiences - sometimes cheap 10cm speaker can get you more details (midrange!) then boomy "mess" of typical 2 or 3 way Hi-Fi box...
Sometimes I look at single-drivers, for example some "Visaton" small and cheap speakers are very linear, but without low bass and with small efficiency. If I only knew how to build, say 4 speaker small open-baffle system with >90dB W/m efficiency...
