Lots-O-Fun, picking on the obscenely mindless.

We should probably host an Audiophile Darwin Awards list here. How many instances might there be of tweaky audiophiles doing really stupid shit in search of audio nirvana? Gotta be a million of 'em!

thats funny, cos i know people who do that

when asked how much theyd spend on their gear,
they said

1000$ on pre amps
10,000$ on speakers
1,000 on interconnects..

4,000$ atleast on cd players

i said : whats wrong with a well designed pre amp kit of 30$ value
my 1600$ horn system will sound good,(jbl2370+DIY midrange horn + 12" pro midbass)
1$ interconnects
mains cable as speaker wire
and whats wrong with my discman!
at diyaudio.com,theres a 100page thread on 'diy interconnects' they had it even drawn in autocad. i mean ,whats wrong with speakons! xlr!

i need no snake oil to please myself

Check this site and see how many really cool ones you can find:

www.AudioTweaks.com

Have you seen people put "special cones" on top of their speakers?

How about cleaning your turntable's tone arm to improve transient timing ("speed")?

Ever seen anyone spend $100,000 on "interconnects" for a single room?

I'm just waiting for one of these guys to tweak themselves to death. I can see the newspaper headlines now:

"Local man dies from electric shock while attempting to apply shark liver oil to the high voltage transformer at the local power substation. Neighbors reported the man complaining that he had done all he could to improve power in his home, and that he was frustrated in attempts to convince the local authorities that the power company needed to modify their equipment, or in his words, to apply his tweak."

My operational theory is that the sort of thing you see in the tweak world is a direct result of promulating belief in the bronze age war gods of the middle east and their variants.

Once you believe in some sort of being in the sky that's affecting your life (or death), you then open up the possibility to believe in anything. And that's in fact perfectly reasonable - if magic can rule in one sphere, why can't it rule in any other? Why can't rational thought be banished when it doesn't fit the evidence in the physical world?

I read a paper relatively recently that postulated a causal relationship between religous belief and mental instability - the constant tension between the rational and the irrational. IMO it's a reasonable thesis.

actualy im a christian-but i dont let beleif come into audio
I love audio FACTS

audio isnt the place for beleif
audio is the place for experiencing and measuring.

An infinite being,if you beleive in one, cannot be measured.

are you saying beleif in a creator is irrational?

Im not mental ;-) ...these basshorns i constantly design will cause me some instability however-freddys horn took several tries to get right

:-)

Got a big laugh out of that. BIG laugh!

Personally, I've come to a conclusion that religion is a system of beliefs, and that in itself, isn't bad. Even believing in science takes faith. Scientific certainty is really a sort of statistical thing, where something that is consistent is assumed to be a fact. But Einstein's theory was an example of the evolution of a scientific belief system.

So to me, religion is a model of life, the universe and everything (to quote one of my favorite authors).

In my model of life, the universe and everything, I've defined my God. It is everything, from the Big Bang onward. Just everything. And even before that, really. Some say that if your God is something you can understand, then your God isn't very powerful. Well, I don't understand everything in the universe, but I do think I can live with this definition and make it part of my beliefs. Everyone that lives believes in this God, at least in as much as they believe that the universe exists, and they exist in it. So there are no aetheists or heretics or whatever. Nothing to argue about for me.

This keeps me "right sized" too. It's a big ol' universe and I'm a tiny part of it. The laws of physics are inviolate, so that is to say God is immutable too. My understanding of this Law may change, but the Law itself, doesn't. Mt job is to fit myself into this Will, and to learn how to do that best I can. Prayer isn't to change outside events to match my expectation; Rather, it is to align my expectations with outside events. It is to help me learn better how to flow with it. Don't push the water uphill - Build a raft and ride the wave.

This philosophy also prevents me from worrying about the afterlife. If there is one, great. My job is to worry about how I'm living right now. What happens tomorrow or in fifty years is something I'll deal with tomorrow or in fifty years. That helps me keep my mind on what I'm doing and not in the clouds.

This is much too deep for the Dungeon. I think I'll resort to silly photos instead.

Check this one out:

But.

This philosophy also prevents me from worrying about the afterlife. If there is one, great. My job is to worry about how I'm living right now.

but to live now affects what happens later.

What if the bible beleiving people are correct, assuming it is true, that one must respect what it says, when it concerns the judgment, and our actions and what we chose to commit our lives to.

hypotheticaly
Assuming the bible is true then surely we must follow what it says?

this is the dungeon ,not for philosophy and theology
:P

Can i honestly say that i beleive the bible because it seems logical ? i dont think one can apply 'logic' but i really mean it 'makes sense to me'

Cheers!

"to live now affects what happens later."

Yep. So if I focus on now and set things straight now, then the future will take care of itself. I can take action today, but I can only think about tomorrow.

"this is the dungeon, not for philosophy and theology"

I think you're right again. This conversation was better suited for the Tower than the Dungeon.

But how 'bout this:

Wayne Hank the angry dwarf died about a year ago, his god was Alchohol, and it killed him. God exists to seperate men so they can justify the misuse and unfair allocation of resources. It is strictly a remnant of the change from hunter gatherer societies to agrarian social order and the worship of material things. My god is the true god so I should have all the food! Disagree and we'll kill you in an oven.
