What do you think about BPL (Broadband over Power Line) communications links? What it is, essentially, is communications over power lines similar to DSL over phone lines. It's a neat idea, but Art Bell and several other Ham radio hobbyists are concerned that modulation of the power grid will act like an enormous antenna that will interfere with HF and VHF radio communications. That includes some amateur and commercial radio bands, so critical services would probably move and abandon some channels and systems. The shortwave bands are in this range, so reception of international broadcasts would probably be adversely affected. Not only that, but it potentially allows interception of your data transmissions. There's surely the "big brother" scare and now an even bigger source of concern - digital terrorism. So I think Art is probably right to sound the bell.
