Hi Bill,

Would you share you opinion of the differences between the JBL 2226J 15" mid-woofer to 1600Hz, Altec-Lansing 902B 1" compression driver
on 800Hz Martinelli Woodhorns, Vifa DX 25 at 13000 Hz speaker that you reviewed on Dagogo in 2006, compared to your newly finished Four Pi Pro speakers that use the B&C DE-250 1" compression tweeter and Eminence 290 horn?

Also, would you include what you feel the DX 25 crossed in at 13K added to the speaker, pro's and con's, if it was coherent and sonically better?

Thanks

Norris

I went back to the Dagogo site because I couldn't recall any comments I made on that but I did write about it here, I believe. Perhaps it was in an amplifier review?

My recollection is that the Vifa at 13,000 just gets lost and doesn't contribute much. I also firmly believe that neither the Altec 806 or 902, either with 811s or the Woodhorns, sounds as good as the B&C DE-250. Both Altecs are shouty in the upper mids, especially with the 811. The B&C is far smoother and cruises on past them into a higher, more real treble, particularly with the H-290( damped, of course).

Speaking with Ron the Spkrman, we agree that the 4 cu ft cabinet has more bass and the 2 1/2 cu ft Pi cabinet less, quantitatively. The quality of the bass from the smaller cabinet, however, is greater. Just tonight I was listening to All The Roadrunning and had my attention caught by some very low electric bass notes I hadn't noticed before.

Building the 4 Pis as I have done is a sort of capitulation to our hobbys attention to striving for that perfect speaker but Wayne's come as close as can be to perfection for me. I'm tired of the experimentation, elation and then disappointment which inevitably follows the building of the latest flavor. With the 4 Pis done, I'm listening to more music than in quite awhile. Now, the only jumping out of my chair I do is to adjust the volume; not the phase, not the horn angle or any of the other gymnastics we all do.

Thanks Bill,

I don't think you could say it any better than that.

Did you listening to the Altec 902 on the H290.
I use this for the 7Pi and donĀ“t find them shouty at all.

No, just the 811 and Woodhorns.

The Woodhorns attenuated a lot of the upper mid excesses I heard with the 902s and 806s but not all.

Glad to hear you're having good results. Different rooms, sources, etc.
