Illuminati (33rd Degree)

I was on a WWII-movie-kick last week, so I watched Saving Private Ryan. I even made the mistake of making myself a nice big snack before I sat down to watch it. Man, is the first of that movie gory! It's an excellent movie, and scenes depicting the taking of Omaha beach are supposed to be gory. But I'm just sayin' that if you haven't watched Saving Private Ryan, don't grab a bunch of hotdogs and load up on the ketchup.

I remembered that Tom Hanks played one of the main characters (Captain John Miller) but had forgotten that Vin Diesel was in it, and that Private Ryan was played by Matt Damon. Lots of big names in that one that I'd forgotten about, probably 'cause they weren't big names yet when this movie was filmed. The plot is good, and the filmmaking realism and soundtrack are great. All-in-all, I thought it was a good movie and worth seeing again.

Sometimes over on the newsgroups in the movie discussions, they
make a poll as to what is your favorite war movie.
I always say the same thing.

The Victors was made in 1963 and directed and co-written
by Carl Foreman. The cast list is impressive, see the link
below for details.

The IMDb (International Movie Database) usually has a link
to Amazon that shows in what media the films are available.
Nothing is showing for The Victors. I did not know if it was
one of those films that got lost due to deteriorating film
stock before video or not.

Maybe The Victors is just a film you _remember._ I know
because it's always the first one I think of.

Wow, bummer, sounds like I'd have a hard time finding that film. I'll look for it though. I'll bet it's one of those that gets shown every now and then on the classic movies channels, so I'll just have to watch for it.

Lots of great war movies made in the 60's. One of my all time favorites is, The Train, starring Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield from 1964. It has many great odd perspective shots. One in particular, a bombing run filmed from the bombadiers perspective. Great story, action and suspense. And of course old Burt as Labiche, smokin them stubby french cigs. As a side note, it's startling to think, a 1000 or so vets from the big one are checking out every day or so.
