I have 4 JBL 2205B 15" speakers in what appears to be VG to EX condition and 2 Altec Lansing 811B Horns with 806A drivers that have been painted gold to match the gold tweed faces of the enclosures they lived in. (These items came out of a church...and though I don't have the enclosures, I do have the faces).

I can find 2225 and 2226 speakers on eBay, and they appear to go for between $100 and $200 each, and the horns with those drivers seem to go for about $300 for the pair.

What makes the 2205's better/worse than the 2225/2226's? Are the "B" drivers upgrades from "J" and "H" drivers?

Thanks in advance!

Dave

these are usually just a little cheaper than 2225/6's, but close in value if in good condition. Is an older model than the others, doesn't have shorting ring to reduce distortion, is good on lower frequencies. Whole setup sounds like a very good rig- are you going to use them or try to sell them?

I'm going to sell them, the horns, and the enclosure faces.

2205's make a nice 4 Pi-pro speaker.

They use a internal space of 2.1 cubic ft vs the 2226 at 2.6 cubic ft.

Think twice before getting rid of them.

Do a search on this forum for 2205 and see my posts and others regarding this wonderful driver.

Wayne used them in the 80's for his version of the 4 Pi-pro!

Regards, Ron

JBL 2205H speakers are very similar to 2226H drivers, and are worth probably $100-200 in good shape. They are tuned very much the same, as JBL tends to make their 22xx series drivers somewhat compatible with each other. The 2205H has a shorting ring, so its distortion is very low, just lke the 2226H. Power handling of the 2226H is a little higher.

Just noticed in your original post that they are 2205B models which are alnico 16 ohm version.

If you are selling them, put them in the classified section of audioroundtable.

Or e-mail me!!!!

Yes, you're right, good catch. The 2205A was an 8 ohm alnico driver, the 2205B was a 16 ohm part. The 2205H and 2205J replaced them with ferrite structures having shorting rings.

My only concern with older alnico drivers is whether or not the magnetic strength is still up to orig spec.

Yes, that's true. There are a lot of things that can weaken alnico magnets.
