I am planning to install a JBL 2226 in a 3.0 cu ft subwoofer cabinet and use a single 6-in dia port about 12-in long. Since the cabinet face does not have enough room to mount the driver and the port, can I install the port on the top of the cabinet, or perhaps the bottom? Is the rear of the cabinet an option, even though any location of the port would be directly behind a portion of the driver cone?

You can mount the port on the bottom, if the speaker will rest on a stand or something that will elevate it off the ground, exposing the port. Or you can put it on top, but I would be concerned about debris falling inside. Having the port in the rear might be your best option.
I always thought a top mounted port looked cool, but be carefull if you got any pets. You can be sure that if a cat falls down that hole, it will chew it´s way out through the cone of the speaker.
