What are the limitations of resizing a port's dimension? For example, if a port's mouth area is a circle of 5 sqr in, can I change it to a rectangular slot of 10 x 1/2? What about 20 x 1/4?

For the most part, it's area that you're concerned with. But as the port becomes more asymmetrical, it begins to act differently. There are standing wave issues that can creep in if a dimension is very long compared to the others, and turbulence instead of laminar flow in the port can alter the resistance, which changes its behavior.
