You can fudge the plans 50 cubic inches with no problems at all, but if you make a tower then be careful about the geometry. If the box weren't so long, this would be a non-issue but the tower configuration makes pipe modes a consideration. If you're going to modify the plans of the tower, you may want to analyze the standing wave modes inside the box. If the standard bookshelf version, just make sure the Helmholtz frequency is right. That holds true on the port dimensions as well.
