CTS is no longer making these. The market is flooded with 75 cent junk from who knows where.

Here is the exact same tweeter as the 1038, but without the silver highlights, just all black (see link below). It is the KSN1056. If you want some, I advise you to stock up.

Also, here is another CTS horn, KSN1016:

I think this is the same driver, but the horn lens is a different shape. I don't know how this affects the sound, or if this is a viable substitute. Perhaps Wayne can answer that.

Pretty cool you've found a place that still has a few of the genuine Motorola/CTS units in stock. I never found any generics that sounded as good. Back when CTS announced they'd cease production, I bought a huge inventory, and it gave me time to look at other options. But ultimately, I didn't find any other parts I was happy with, so I changed to the Vifa tweeter instead.

I just got some KSN1142a's, the CTS Powerline 1800hz horn drivers, from Martin Sound for only $16 ea. These are pretty good.

The KSN1142a is the same driver as the KSN1165, which has a small horn on it.

The KSN1165a's are also Powerline series. I have a pair of these for my home stereo, used with some Speakerlab W1008b woofers. These are 10" woofers that have an Fs of 20 hz. In 2 cft sealed boxes go down to a nice 45 hz.

The woofers were rated as SPL=92 db, as are the 1165's, but they sounded too bright. Wayne and I have talked about this, we both agree that the CTS's are really more like 96-97db.

So, I put an 8 ohm resistor across the terminals, and an Lpad in front of it. I have 11 uf cap going to it (10 + 1).

On the woofer, just a zobel (I don't remember the cap right now) and a .75 mH inductor.

To my ear, turning the L-pad down -4 db gives the most natural sound.

I have some KSN1188's, rated at SPL=93 db, used with some PA speakers rated at 97 db. Yet they sound right.

I agree with Wayne, only the genuine CTS/Motorola Powerline piezos are worth fooling with.

Wayne... I am using the 1188's now with my PA speakers, and have them biamped. I find the best sound is with the crossover turned as low as the 1188's will respond, using their full frequency range, which is down 650 hz -3db. That is amazing.

Unfortunately, 1188's, if you can find them, are about $50, and you can get the excellent Eminence PSD2002's for that price.

I might have to try a One Pi with your Vifa option Wayne.

Luckily I have several of the KSNs like posted in the link above, since selling my Stage 4 Pis I have had alot of time with my One Pis..I really love them. Probably moreso than my Stage 4 Pis believe it or not.

I dont know...there is some characteristic about the 1038s that make me like them more than the PDS-2002s...I cannot quite put my finger on it though.

I know exactly what you mean. Design-wise, the One-Pi's are very similar to single-driver approach. Once you get used to the lack of deep bass, they're very engaging.

I also am using the KSN1165's for my home system, coupled with the Eminence Delta 12LF's...can't recall the all the details I used in putting them together but I am quite pleased with the resulting sound...it's been 2 years now and I enjoy them more & more....Paul C. coached me through the design details and they sound great...the KSN1165's are a great little tweeter that can handle alot of juice when I want to "crank-it-up"; too bad they stopped making them....I still have 2 that are in the plastic...I'll get around to using them some day...ports.

Can these be a drop in replacement for the 2002's? As cheap as they are, it would be fun to try them out (assuming they are direct replacements).

The KSN1038 only goes down to 3.5kHz and max SPL is not as high as the PSD2002 on a horn. Two different birds.
