No, not as long as possible and definitely not rubbing. You just want contact all the way to the front of the pole piece.
A heatsink on the end will be great. I'd go with aluminum, and be sure the thermal interface between the sink and cooling plug is good. A nice flat fit with plenty of surface area and heat conductive grease is best.
