I recently completed my 4 pi's, and had planned all along to add a pair of subwoofers to complement them, but I have not decided what the best option is. The subwoofer I've been most impressed with, specification wise, is the VMPS larger subwoofer (VMPSaudio.com). It claims to have a -3dB point of 19 Hz, and output 20Hz at 115 dB with 5% distortion, which is hard to believe. So, before I'd purchase this kit, I'm curious what other subwoofer options would people suggest. I'd like it to be flat to nearly 20Hz, need a box of not much bigger than 8 cubic feet, be relatively efficient, and I have a price cap of about $350 per box. I've looked around a lot, but haven't found anything that really excited me.

I have a VMPS larger and it sounds nice as a sub, but I can't comment on its max output, because I've never pushed it anywhere close to a point where it sounds stressed. Its certainly not a weenie, as you'd expect with such a large sub with so much Vd. The 18" woofers Wayne mentioned may be better, but at that point, why not just build the 7Pi-18? It'd probably be cheaper than a 4Pi + the 18" sub? Even if you don't have corners, you could still run the 18" in direct radiator mode. -Ian

Thanks for the advice Ian. I've already built the 4 pis, and my goal has been to have some remotely transportable speakers. I have a sedan, so moving the monstrous 18" subs Wayne suggests, would be rather challenging. I of course, enjoy giant speakers, but if you recommend the VMPS, that puts one step closer to buying the kit. I already own a pair of VMPS Tower II speakers though, and have had a very challenging time tuning them for good response. Have you had similar troubles with the Larger Subwoofer? Phil

I honestly haven't spent any time tuning it. It sounds good to me, but I only use it under 60hz and I don't have a large enough room to move it around much, especially since its so large. It sounds better than my huge(12cuft) homebuilt sub which used an 18" woofer in a ported box, but thats what you'd expect for a professionally designed sub. What is the best way to tune a sub? I was under the impression the radio shack meters weren't very accurate at low frequencies. Also, I don't have any real EQ, so I'm not sure what I could do to it. -Ian
