That's right. What we want to accomplish is attenuation of higher frequency standing waves. Hanging sheets of insulation suspended a little way from on wall would be a great way to do it, but it would also be harder to accomplish. The trick is to reduce higher frequency energies inside the cabinet without altering cabinet tuning too much.
