Why not all sides in PI cabinets?

Please, What does Live-Side/Dead-Side mean? [message #45283 is a reply to message #45282] Fri, 27 August 2004 11:20 Go to previous messageGo to next message

For example, Wayne recommends putting damping material on the back side, bottom, and one of the side.

A dead side (lined) always faces a live side (not lined).

I thought the purpose was to attenuate the midrange some by keeping it from bouncing between opposite faces. only one side lined is needed to do that. Putting more in than necessary would have a deadening effect and reduce the liveliness of the speaker.

That's right. What we want to accomplish is attenuation of higher frequency standing waves. Hanging sheets of insulation suspended a little way from on wall would be a great way to do it, but it would also be harder to accomplish. The trick is to reduce higher frequency energies inside the cabinet without altering cabinet tuning too much.

Thank you, ... [message #45287 is a reply to message #45286] Fri, 27 August 2004 16:00 Go to previous messageGo to next message
