Thermionic 3Pi with midrange horn ? [message #44728]

Hi,

A while ago I build the 3Pi's.
Now I was wondering if it would be a good idea
to add a midrange horn to this design (with an Eminence Alpha 6)
or just leave the design as is ?

Actually, I think the reason that Wayne would rather leave the 3Pi as-is is because that speaker is supposed to be a simple and low-cost solution that works well how it is.

Wayne's put togethor the 8Pi loudspeaker if one wants to use a midrange horn. Or use one with the Pi cornerhorns instead.....

I see. anyway DIY means to make thing better then other, or for special size or disign. I never heard any 2 way loudspeaker better 3 ways system or 2+1. let it be cheap, but voice range of waves must be a real.

The choice to go 3-way or 2-way really depends on what you're trying to do. There are pro's and con's either way. I have seen excellent implementations of both.

Wayne sells the 3Pi's as completed speakers hence his opinion to leave them as-is would be somewhat based around that I'd assume...

You're exactly right. The midwoofer in this speaker is really a wide range driver and works very well through the midrange. I like the two-way configuration for speakers like these. This design makes use of a wide range midwoofer driver and eliminates a crossover point. For a three-way or four-way speaker, I'd rather use a woofer that's tuned low and optimized for use below the midrange band.
