Hey everyone!

Am thinking of using the Eighteen Sound 8M400 driver in a tractrix midrange horn, it models VERY well in hornresp. I was told that the LENGTH of the front chamber can make a difference, no matter what hornresp says. 1cm is too short according to this person for 6-8" drivers :P is this correct? I have no idea, would 2cm length be ok?

Hi Adrian!

If you have reliable measurements that consistently show something different than what Hornresp predicts, I think it would be nice for you to write to David McBean. He has done an admiral job with this program and has updated it many times over several revisions in order to keep it as accurate and up-to-date as possible. So I think you can trust it to give accurate response curves, provided you've entered data correctly.

The one place I know it will deviate is response due to non-pistonic diaphragm modes, which happen at high frequencies. You may see increased output at high frequencies due to underlations across the surface of the diaphragm, which aren't considered by the program. It would need to know a lot more about the composition and geometry of the cone to predict such behaviour.

But other than that, I think it does a great job, and like I said, if you find evidence that consistently shows something other than Hornresp predicts, you might want to write David McBean so he can consider whether he should update his mathematical models.
