Well, my son and I finally finished the 2 Pi Towers. I am not cabinent maker but I'm happy with the way they turned out.

The pics were taken with my sons web-cam, not a camera so they are not the best pictures but I think you will get the idea.

I would not have stained them the dark color, that my son wanted them and they are his so it was his choice. The color of the stain is ebony, a simi-transparent stain. He was going for an all black finish (yuck) but I at least convinced him to let a bit of the plywood grain show through and to trim the corners in natural.

These towers are NOT built to the specs that Wayne designed. Hight is the same (46") but they are deeper-16 1/2" and narrower 14 1/2". I did intend to make them this way, but they actually ended up a bit bigger (width and depth) than I intended.

It took me longer than I expected(about 50 hours in all) after a while the boy lost intrest and I was flying solo. That's O.K. they were a birthday gift and I wasn't going to force him to help.

All in all it was fun and rewarding (a few frustrations) and I plan to do it again with another model. These will be mine!

BTW... the towers ROCK!

Hi Rodney!

Try the links on the post called "Uploading images." I'm really anxious to see your speakers, so I hope that free hosting site will work for you.

Take care!

I have a bathroom between us. He is acutally pretty good about now leaving the volume up for long periods of time. I don't mind hearing it cranked up from time to time. I even had to give him a little talk about the damage that can be done to ones hearing. He did not really want to hear it (no pun...really), but I had to tell him anyway, these speakers are capable of some good sound and it is much easier to turn it up than it is with crap speakers. His old speaker were a KLH sub/sat system from Best Buy. He was pretty happy with that before, but I don't think there is any going back now. His eyes (and ears) have been opened.

It's good you talked to him about that! Many people simply don't seem to know - & even with just 25 Watts or so these speakers can go over 110dB at 1 meter (a bit over 3')

I do think though that headphones are more risky in the ear damage department. To my experience there is a limit as to how loud you wanna play, especially in smaller rooms - they simply cannot 'carry' the volumes of loud systems. The sound becomes distorted even if the equipment in itself is perfectly capable of delivering that loudness undistorted.

I hope your son (& you) will have much pleasure from your new speakers - as I said, he's lucky to have you as a father!
