do the woofer and tweeter need to be sealed along the front face of the speaker (e.g. silicon ...)?

Hi Jeff!

Yes, the speakers should be sealed. In many cases, no gasket sealer is necessary. But if you find an air leak, seal it with some form of sealant - Silicon or caulk will be just fine.
