is 3.5 inch insulation too thick for the 2 pi towers?

this seems to be the thinnest i can find and i'd rather not try to separate a thinner layer.

No, it's fine. I like to use R11 or R13, which are both about 3" thick when fully expanded. My experience is that it varies from 2-3 inches, and it works very well.
