Hi Folks, After forever, I've finally finished a set of speakers my wife would let in the house. These are slightly oversized 2 Pi's with KSN1165's instead of the KSN1038's. They are made from birch plywood and solid walnut. The finish is tung oil, a mix of tung, poly, and thinner, blonde shellac, and paste wax. The wife still wants grill cloths installed, I'm stalling but will eventually conceed. The Alpha-10 is crossed over around 2K. Here's the URL: http://12.246.10.170:1280/woodworking3.html BTW, they sound pretty darn good and there's not much lacking for when it comes to bass. Those Alpha 10's are a great deal. They don't match the bi-amped JBL 3677's in the garage, but are really nice for the bedroom. Thx Wayne!!! Chris

The extra work sure paid off visually! The darker "borders" lend a very substantial look. Although they may not stand up to the giants in the garage, if you A-B them with the vast majority of commercial speakers out there you'll feel justified in taking the time to make them beautiful. Nice work. John

Chris, Nice job on the cabinets! You say you crossed the Alpha 10's over at 2khz, what crossover did you use, and if I may be nosy, why the 1165's instead of the 1038's???? Thanks, Ron

The crossover is a 12dB. I think a .8mH coil and a 10uF cap. The speakers are a little bright around 2K, so it probably needs shifting down a little. As for the tweeters, I have both and favored the 1165's for the extra midrange. It was also partly fear of the hump in the A10's around 4.5K. I can't complain.

> Super way to leave the walnut proud of the cabinet. Tough to convince > most people it looks better that way than flush. Its this way mostly because it was easier than flush and once the grill are in place, it will be a flush front with the nice frame. > How did you decide to combine all those ingredients in the > finish? No problem getting the Tung to combine with the poly? Or did > you do it in layers? Its in layers. Actually, the initial coat was the tung, poly, thinner mix on the front and bottom. Plain tung on the rest. It sat a week while I was out of town, and when I got back, the rest sort of had the grain raised. Not bad but it wasn't as smooth as it was. The front and bottom were still smooth. I did a coat of the mix again on the whole thing (after some light sanding). I'm not real happy about how it goes on. Its doesn't seem to stay mixed, but once wiped off, it feels nice and drys just fine overnight. Next was two coats of shellac brushed on. Again, not a perfect job, but you have to look close. A little steel wool, and wipe, and the wax. The waxing adds a nice warmth and evens out the sheen and feels great. > They really look great. The trim in picture frame fashion gives > you a great way to add the grilles when you're ready. I have maybe 5 yards of the black from PE. I can't remember what I was smoking when I placed the order. 5 yds is a huge amount. Now I'm thinking something the color of the birch from AE might be nicer. Thx, Chris
