Sealed Box - JBL or Eminence woofer ? [message #38122] Sat, 31 August 2002 11:44 Go to next message

I'm designing a crazy home stereo cabinet, 5 way, it will be
100% fully electronic crossed over with multiple amplifiers.

I will be using both woofers and subwoofers.

I seek good bass guitar reproduction and high sensitivity so I
desire a prosound 18" woofer in a sealed box, but for earth shaking low end, I will also have another seperate high x-max subwoofer enclosure in a vented box. The reason I don't want to go vented on
both woofer and subwoofer is because I want to capture two type of
sound/performance.

The problem I have is finding a good 18" woofer (high sensitivity)
that can f3 in a sealed box around 40hz. WinISD said the JBL 2245H woofer will f3 around 52hz, the Eminence Killomax 18" f3 is lower,
around 42hz.

What does this tell me? The Eminence Killomax will outperform
the JBL in a sealed box when it comes to low frequency extension?

BUT, if I EQ the JBL to extend the low end, will it outperform the
Eminence ?

I also looked at EV 18" but they f3 around 65-70hz, PHL woofers
are around the low 60hz.

Any other woofers I missed ?

Did JBl model 2241H replace the 2245H ? The 2241H f3's around
60hz, higher than 2245H. What is the story on both models ?

I believe, but you'll have check this. the 2245 is the oldest and it was replace with the 2241. now the 2242 is the latest and greatest.

If your looking to save a few bucks off JBL. I have heard the Kilomax 15 and I think you would be happy with the Kilomax 18 also. The JBL 2245's I have sound great and I have no complaints. Kilomax is half the money though.

There are some other big drivers out there. They cost around 1500 and more. too much for me.

Also thinking about the adire maelstrom, $300

the only way to really know is to try a few woofers
and make a test box - lol

the JBL 2235 15", it's tuned like the 2245 18" (20 Hz fs) and still readily availible.

Thanks for the tip.

Hows the EV EVX-180 compare to JBL?

For a true subwoofer, I think you'd be better off going with something like an Adire Tempest or even a Brahma in a large ported box, tuned very low. You won't have the sensitivity, but that doesn't really matter if you are going with a purely active system.

If you want some amazing midbass, run an array of four Seas Excel 8's on each channel... It'll cost you the same as a single beefy JBL driver, maybe a little more, and will probably sound better. Some of the best midbass/midrange drivers around. Take them down to 60 Hz, couple that with a Brahma 15" in a large, low tuned box... You will have a killer bass/midbass system.

I know my midbass sugestion isn't an 18" woofer, but I just wanted to present some alternative choices to you... You don't need an 18" midbass for a good bass guitar sound. The Quad excels would also give you higher sensitivity or very similar.

That would be my next years project actually - hehe
but I think I would use at least 8 per channel.
Someone suggested this on the madisound forum
using newform ribbons, the ones that are rated
for 92db sensitity and cost $1200? pair.
....a cool line array..
