I have a chance to pick up either the 2241H or 2245H, however the 2241's are more expensive. Is the 2245, which is designed for low frequency, a suitable speaker for a Pi-subwoofer??

in my opinion the 2242h is the best one can do for a subwoofer speaker.

The 2241 is JBL's most popular 18" product and it's pretty easy to find. The 2242 is their latest offering and it is capable of greater output but not quite as deep extension. Both are commonly used in cabinets having EBS alignments. The 2245 is tuned for greater bass extension. It is excellent for use as a high-fidelity subwoofer.

The 2245 has superior parameters for true subwoofer performance. You will need a very large box to take full advantage of it. The 2242 will give very hi power handling but is more a woofer than subwoofer. There was an article titled "Certifiable bass for the certifiable" in Audio magazine several years ago showing what duall 2235 drivers can do when each driver is in a 10 cubic foot cabinet tuned to 20 hertz. The same kind of performance is posible with the 2245 ussing a 16 cubic foot box. Properly praced and tuned, this will eat most so called subwoofers for lunch. It should only be used for about 2 octaves when used this way. When using a more conventional tuning it can be used as a wider range driver.
