As I understand it, you are comfortable with a positive 90 degree phase shift as not breaking the time space continuum, but a negative 90 degree phase shift is more of a conceptual problem. How about trying this--apply a positive ninety degree phase shift to a signal and then reverse the polarity of the signal. Now you have a negative 90 degree phase shift, but you haven't broken any laws of physics.
