Well, not being one to leave well enough alone, I've been wondering about a HF motor upgrade to my Thermionic 3pi's. Actually a friend came over yesterday to have a listen to the new speakers and got me thinking about it -- thanks a lot Harry.

So I'm wondering if I can swap out my Eminence PSD2002 motors for JBL 2426H motors. It looks like I can still keep the crossover at 1600hz. Has anyone tried this? If so, what would I need to do to get the thing in balance, and can the 2426 just be bolted on to the horn? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Steve

You can swap them with no other changes, just bolt them on. The Eminence driver has a little more energy in the top octave. The JBL rolls off a little more, but its response curve is a little smoother too. Both sound very nice.

Wayne, will the 2426 deliver greater ouput and remain undistorted more than the PSD2002?

I imagine it would... You know I'm planning a system with four 2426's, very pricey!

The average output is about the same, but the Eminence PSD2002 driver has greater output in the top octave. The way this is done is through diaphragm flex resonance or breakup modes. So the JBL 2426 is a little more refined, but without as much high frequency output. Both sound very good.

Yeah, I must say I am growing fond of the sound of my 2002's.

I think I just scored a pair of beautiful woofers from TC Sounds for my bass horns, and they'll be tossin out some serious output and I'll need a system to keep up with them :)

Remember a while ago I posted that link to the plutonium, and said "how about THESE for some ten pi's"? Well, same 1200 ounce magnet, different design geared for sound reinforcement instead of car use...

Then maybe I'd be better off considering a woofer upgrade? Seems like the JBL 18" is in a similar size cabinet to the 3pi Thermionic. It also seems to be about the same efficency rating. I don't suppose I could upgrade to an 18" woofer? To tell the truth, my 12" is the biggest I've ever used and I love what it does for bass weight and body. It does (in my system) get a little boomy and lacks some deffinition at times, so I wonder if a cabinet tweek and/or different driver would address this. I would say, however, I only experience this on some recordings played real loud. In general the Eminance Alpha 12 is very good!
Thoughts?

Honestly, I agree. I'd spend the money on improved LF motors before I'd spend it on improved HF motors - You'll get more for your money that way.

is that 1200 yankee ounces? [message #36938 is a reply to message #36932] Mon, 17 June 2002 17:54 Go to previous messageGo to previous message
