I've been researching SET amps, and it seems that a good speaker match is essential for that "magical" tube sound.

I would like either a 45 based tube amp or a 300B tube amp. I'm leaning toward the 300B because it opens up the range of speakers that can be successfully used - but I'd prefer the 45.

My room is 15x14, and opens up into a 10x15 room. I'd like it floorstanding, and it can't be too large (a 24" wide speaker is too big - you know WAF!). I was looking at the 4pi speaker with JBL motors - it seems to be of relatively reasonable size. Would this be a good choice? Are the folded horns easy to construct out of plywood?

Thanks! These look like fun speakers to build...

The Pi you refer to are the Pro's which are not as large as the Theatre or Thermionic. Sir Isaac says smaller, not as efficient or deep, one or the other. 300B should do a pretty good job with 4 Pros but I could really get into the EL-34 Triodes sold by DIYHISUPPLY of Hong Kong and represented by our good friend Kevin Haskins. www.diycable.com
EL-34's and JBL's go together like.....well.....a Fender Showman and a Stratocaster.
Also, take a look in the archives at Garlands's Theatre 4's. His design (he's an architect) seems to reduce the visual scale of them.
If you see mine you'll think that Shamu was used to push a set of Maytag's on stage at "the Price Is Right"!
