I am considering building a set of studio 2Pi, Thermionic 3Pi, or Theater 4Pi to go with tube amps of PP (up to 40 watts) or SET design. Which of these speakers will play well at lower volume levels? Can't always crank it up in the living room. I haven't decided on an amp yet, so suggestions on appropriate matches between speakers and amps (kits preferred) would be appreciated. Just getting into tubes. Thanks in advance.

Each of those will work very nicely for you.

Thanks, Wayne. I now have it down to the Thermionic 3 Pi or the Theatre 4 Pi. Is the 4 Pi better at lower volume levels than the three Pi because it is more efficient? Fewer watts required to reach a given sound pressure level, or is there not that much difference?

There's not a lot of difference with respect to your amp, the amount of sound and suitability for use at low listening levels. But your room may make a difference. If you plan to use these speakers in corners or against the wall, I'd suggest using the Theater four π speakers. On the other hand, if these will be pulled away from the walls or out in the open, then you might like the Thermionic three π speakers better.

Hi Peter,

I just wanted to comment that one of the best aspects I've experienced with my Theater 4's is their ability to play at both high and low volumes and maintain a pleasing dynamic and tonal quality. They are the first speakers which I've owned that do this so well. So I can recommend the Theater 4 Pi if you want this ability to sound good at lower levels. I am driving mine with 3.5 watts of 2A3 power and can easily get over 100dB's if I want and suffer little distortion, but low, "after bed-time" levels, are still amazingly real sounding!

I'm in the process of helping a friend build a pair of 2 Pi's and will report on how they perform as soon as they're done! (Assuming he'll let me borrow them!!!)

G.

Thanks, Garland. Just the info I was looking for. If you do get a chance to compare the 4 Pi's with the 2 Pi's I would like to hear your impressions.
