The fancy quilted maple veneer I used on the 4's was a screwed up mess! Kicked my ass. It would have taken hot hide glue to make it right. I tore it off the cabinets. $150 shot!
So I'm cruising E-bay and do a search for veneer. Here's non-backed veneer, furniture grade in 25X80 sheets and the bidding is going to be maybe 0.60/ft! I win 110 sq ft of white maple and 55 sq ft of Honduras mahogany (gorgeous) and pay about $70 with freight.
Vendors ID is 'woodforyou'.
I used 3M '77' spray adhesive and got results almost as good as contact adhesive on paper-backed veneer. Without the fumes. A little tear out but not too bad. Had to clean the gunk from the bit after every pass.
Just an FYI.
I finished one speaker today in the maple. How many of you think I ought to do the right channel in mahogany? Hands?

mahogany riser box under the 4 Pi might be nice.
just high enough to notice the two tone, and raise the box to on axis with your ear while sitting.

I like to make thing symetrical. But if costs is a problem, then go with the mahogany veneer.

For my 4 Pi I used already veneered MDF sheets (veneered on both sides which I thought was a waste).

I like this idea too... [message #35581 is a reply to message #35575] Wed, 20 March 2002 03:26 Go to previous messageGo to next message

Still symmetrical, but the two tones would look really sharp.

because then you can see if the different veneer makes it sound different..................THERE would be one for the tweak forum.............a whole new realm to obsess over. "But what is the best signal to break in a dark tuttiwood veneer?"

do that? I have several sets like BBQ proposes, most by EV from the 1950's. Lime Oak and Walnut. Lime Oak and Majogany. Majogany and unfinished birch. Then the unfortunate Cherry Urethane applied at 100 degrees last summer...one came out darker than the other. No comment regarding the esthetics...Sam

The rule in veneeering is what you do to one side of the substrate you do to the other so you don't get warping. Kind of like dealing with spoiled sisters!
I like the idea of the mahogany riser and I'll raise you a mahogany band all the way around the upper 3/4" of the cabinet!
