I'd probably use a high quality, high power car amp and if it must be disconnected from the car when used, I'd use a good motorcycle, car or tractor battery carried alongside the amp. It could be charged easily using household current or even by plugging into the cigarette lighter on the way. You'll still need some form of a preamp because the pickups on the bass generate a microphone-level signal. As for speakers, Eminence woofers that have "LF" in their name are good for building physically small cabinets and there are several JBL Professional Series woofers that would be great for this as well.
