You can generally change the shape of the box as long as you don't make it so standing waves setup inside the box in the bass or midbasss range. The damping material inside the box attenuates midrange and higher standing waves, but it is acoustically transparent at low frequencies. Avoid tall thin "tower" enclosures unless you are trying to design a transmission line. If you do build a tall thin box and intend to tune it with Helmholtz resonance instead of 1/4 wave modes, then you'll have to carefully position the woofer and port so they aren't energized by standing wave nodes.
