The Pi Speakers web site has been changed to reflect Eminence's new 2001 product specifications. If any of you require the 2000 model specs, please let me know and I'll E-Mail them to you privately.

Most of the products were not changed, and specifications reflected either no change or only a insignificant fractional change - well within tolerance. Of those that had relatively significant changes, some should be considered to be improvements but most were probably mistyped or incorrectly calibrated measurements. For example, some motors listed relatively high Xmax, but Qms was fairly low. In these cases, Xmax is shown to be a more reasonable figure while Qms changed very little.

The consequence of these changes is minimal - most designs that were optimal for a 2000 model driver are also optimal for the corresponding 2001 version. Notable exceptions are the Alpha 15 and the Omega 12. The Alpha 15 will require a different cabinet and the Omega 12 will require a different crossover.

Below is a chart showing the differences between the 2001 models and their 2000 counterparts:

You list the Beta 12 as being tube unfriendly but according to the Eminence site the Zmax of the Beta 12 series ranges from about 78 to 94 ohms. Is there another reason?

Well, I see below that your recommended cutoff for Zmax and tubes is 50 ohms. How bad is the 75-90 ohm range going to be?

There are two loudspeaker criteria that are important for SET owners in addition to the usual matters of sound quality. One is efficiency and the other is impedance. You need high efficiency because amplifier power is limited and impedance peaks should be as small as possible because amplifier output impedance is fairly high. If there are big peaks in impedance, they will interact with the amplifier and be manifested as peaks in response.
Very informative, thanks. (nt) [message #33136 is a reply to message #33135] Mon, 02 April 2001 23:00 Go to previous message
