I have been playing with some other tubes in Guienevere. I have fallen out of love with the 5687, we’re still good friends but in this application I think it is a bit "hard" sounding and the pin out bugs me. By shifting over to the "conventional" pin out I tried a pair of 6n6p, which are pretty close electrically but uses the same pin out as the "usual suspects" . So far so good. But hey why stop there. We already have "dial a milliamp" ( must revue the archives for Colin’s trick current set up) . For bias I have, 3, 1.6 LED’s in series and for now, I just twist 1 or more of them till there Leeds touch to short them out to lower the bias. I am working on a more elegant solution that fits my little board. Maybe an IC socket or a jumper setup. With this I can try most any twin triode with a 9A pin out, with heaters wired for 6v, 9AJ and more, just check you'r RC30. this includes the 12a*7 and 6922 clan. 6fq7 anyone? That’s a lot of tubes…John

Then you'll be able to run 6CG7's as well. Also 6BQ7/6BK7 but those have mu of ~40 instead of the 5687's 16. I have a sack of 6H6Pi tubes. GOt those wonderful things for $2.45 each. They are a nice alternative to the 5687. I can't say I've ever found the 5687 hard, save at very low current like 2 mA or so. Usually I find it a bit to soft...heh-heh-heh, audio language and at best small computer sound systems to sort it out. I am sort of stuck on the 12B4, and wish I could have one like it with about mu=3. cheers, Douglas

I have a hard time with the Russian to eastern alphabet . I think we speak of the same tube, at least that is my read of the data sheets. Yes I have a pair of 6fq7/6cg7 that are next up. I make no claim to be a "golden ear" I takes me some time to decide if a change is better , or different …John

It is the same tube. On the glass it says 6H6, as does the 6H30 which does go by that designation, unless we translate it first.... I am going to build in a bit more gain( or a bit less ) so I can use either a 12B4 or a cathode follower. Right now I am right in between. cheers, Douglas
