Does any serious audiophile collect 45 RPM records? I know they are interesting collectables in their own right, but it seems to me that the ones I had were not cut in as good quality as the long-play 12" 33 RPM discs. I would expect that the faster speed made it possible to cut higher quality disk recordings. So 45's and even 78's, for that matter, could have been made very good, I imagine. But it just seems like they weren't made for sound quality as much as they were made to promote individual songs cheaply, and targeted for use on portable record players with heavy needle weight. Were the "not for resale" distribution copies sent out to radio stations made differently? Were they maybe of better quality? What's the word on 45's?

12" (small hole) 45 RPM records are easily the best sources I have.
some were put out as EPs, others direct-to-disk. That velocity really
counts. Acoustic Sounds issues some releases in 45 and I think Classic
Records does as well. 2 12" 45's for each original 33 LP. I can't
afford those critters these days, but I expect that they are amazing.Skip

Wayne, many of my artists use http://www.europadisk.com/ to have 45 RPM 12" vinyl made. Don Grossinger there does the lathe work and is top notch in his transfers. We use 45RPM for maximum dynamic potential. Since we have been using Don, 100% of the works have been 45RPM. Very high quality pressings.

Yep. I checked on those sites and they both had 12" 45's.
There's a Stevie Ray Vaughn/Albert Collins (2 disks, $50)
at Acoustic Sounds (Analogue Productions is their own label)
that should be exquisite.Skip

Hey Wayne! Doesn't this belong in Vinyl? ;-0 But seriously, the 45rpm heavy vinyl reissues of classic albums beat the 33rpm versions by a good margin. Some of them come with both so you can really compare. Of course, that only feeds the hunger for more 45's, which is just what they have in mind! So, for a single LP 33 1/3 release you can end up with over a kilogram of vinyl:
One 220 gram slab with two sides stamped @33 1/3
Three or Four 220 gram slabs with one side stamped @ 45 to cover the same material! Crazy, crazy, crazy . . . . but the sound! Yeah, baby!

Caveat emptor. I bought it, and the sonic quality is great, but on this album Albert's playing ain't, I'm afraid. IMHO, of course. YMMV.
