I heard about this high definition TVs having two sets of resolution; the 1080i and 720p. What are these two pests mean actually? How do they differentiate from the older versions of television that we used to have?

The 1080 and 720 refer to the vertical resolution used - standard TVs I believe are 625.

The i refers to interlaced - the same system that standard PAL uses where on one pass every other line is done, eg lines 1,3,5,7 and then the second pass lines 2,4,6,8...etc are done.

The p is for progressive - where all the lines are done every pass, giving a crisper, clearer picture.

Standard TV has 525 scan lines and is interlaced.

I also have seen these features on the new TV's. What would you recommend then if I have to choose from 1080i and 1080p? How can check the difference between these 2 options?

1080p is much better. It displays all lines in each frame, where 1080i only displays every other line per frame.
