anybody have any thoughts on whether to use dipoles or regular speakers for the sides in a 7.1 setup...my room is 26x13 and seating will be about 10-12 ft back....

I think I'd prefer dipoles or horns. But understand that I generally prefer horns anyway, since I make them. The main thing for me is uniform directivity, not so much a narrow pattern, particularly in the surround positions. They're there to create ambience anyway, and to provide some directional details.
I am now just setting up my first 7.1 after been using 5.1 for a while now. I think the most important thing is to use similar/same type speakers for the sides that you use for the rest of your set up. You want them all to voice the same, right? I am moving from my vintage all JBL set up to an all Hales 7.1 set up. Well, 7 Hales and one JBL subwoofer. Good luck! John
thanx for the input.. i have decided against using dipoles because after researching, i found for 7.1 music it is better to use normal speakers and my system will be used for both theater and multi channel listening. i ended up getting a great deal on a pair of new paradigm studio 100v3, i will be using studio 40v3 for the rear and hope to pick up some studio 20v3 for the center rears...
But wouldn't dipoles be strange for music? I have not listend to multi-channel music yet, but I would think you would want a more direct sound, not sound just bouncing around?
