it depends on price, but i think sony is a decent brand and has a broad price range, i have has good luck with the "ES" line which is their higher end, i don't believe in buying very low priced gear, you get what you pay for!
i just bought a rotel 1067 receiver and love it, a bit pricey, but rotel makes good stuff...
as far as speakers go i think paradigm is the way to go, they have several lines again at different price points, the reference studio line is very good, they are not as good for music as home theater...
denon and klipsch are also big sellers in the home theater market, like you say there are so many!, but i like rotel and paradigm, sony for dvd.......
i have a first generation 46" samsung dlp t.v., it's awesome, i think for t.v.'s right now, samsung and mitsubishi are making the best dlp's, i'm looking at a 67, 71 or 73" from either of these companies......hopes this helps,,,,,,,
