Does anybdy know what the mod is? I assume it's something relatively simple, but all I can find is "send the amp to a service center".

Have you pulled the covers and looked on the circuit board, usually Crowns are pretty good about labeling stuff on the circuit boards for this stuff. I know the older ones had a switch on the back, so who knows maybe they just made the switch internal. If you don't have any luck I can pull the covers on one here at work and have a look.
