Sounds like you have a speaker with a field coil instead of a fixed magnet. Does it have four wires coming from it? If so, it is most likely a field coil speaker. You'll need a power supply for it because one pair of wires is the field coil, which is an electromagnet. This is used in place of a fixed magnet. The voice coil works just like speakers with a fixed magnet, signal current is applied through it and this causes the cone to move.
