I have a peavey valve king 2x12. Now, when I turn it up and pick heavy on my strings, I get very ugly distortion. even on the clean channel. If I play lightly, it is not too bad. I just replaced the preamp tubes and this did not fix the problem. any ideas?

Do you know anything about high voltage? If not, take it to a trained technician.
The inards of a tube amp are deadly if you are not careful.
That said, I had an amp that did this because of a bad power
supply filter cap. It could be any number of things, and you need
an 'oscope to view what's going on.

Sorry I don't have insight into that particular model, but it reminds me of trouble I had with my Peavey Standard head.

It would get a horrible hum, and suck the speakers back into the cabinet until I turned it off. After a few tries at getting it fixed, it seems to be alright now, although I haven't used it for awhile.
