Sometimes when I play in Clean channel (channel 1) the amp cuts out and i have to give the amp a little smack for it to start working again. It only happens in channel 1. I have just replaced the power tubes and this problem still occurs.... could it be the preamp tubes or a short somewhere?

You might look for dirty tube sockets and cold solder joints. Use some electronics cleaner on the tube sockets and inspect the solder joints looking for a dull surface, pitting or cracks.
