Does anyone know where I can have the voice coils rebuilt? Are there kits for the DIY or is it wiser to send them into the shop?
Appreciate all responses...

Sounds like this is kind of new to you so send 'em to a pro. Those are too rare and expensive to experiment on.

Yeah, I'm new to this kind of stuff. Through research I know what I have, now. What scares me is I haven't found a tech yet that'll effect the repair.

...the quest continues.
Thank you...

Call David Miller at Speakerworks (918) 664-6299 and see if he might recommend someone. Steve Schell might also have a suggestion for you, maybe he'll chime in.

From what I've seem of WE gear on eBay, you could be sitting on a pot 'o gold. I'm not familiar with the 555s, but vintage WE stuff is VERY collectible. Like Wayne said, make sure you get the job done right and don't screw around with these......Colin

Hi Guys...
Had a nice talk with Dave Miller today pertaining to the 555's. What the conversation boiled down to is this...certain modern drivers that use 4" VC's may work as a replacement. Provided all physical measurements prove out. Having opened up one 555 already (burned coil)all the measurements could be taken and compared to what's out there. The question is will the repaired driver have the same qualities of sound that an original 555 have?...or will it be totally different?
It's a shame that the coil itself cannot be replaced....this diaphragm looks perfect otherwise.

Your thoughts?

With a different diaphragm, it's a different animal. Maybe not bad, but different.

Yes....that remains to be seen....and heard. It's gonna be an expensive experiment....I'm up for it.
Thanking everyone for their input...
