I found this radio at a garage sale just today (8/14/08) and I was wondering what year this was made and if there are replacement parts available. According to another website that I visited, this is an Airline 14BR-736 model radio made by Montgomery Wards. Can someone help me find info on this radio?

That's excellent. I have a few Airline models and I've found information is scarce to none. The reason is Montomery Ward bought radio chassis from OEM's like RCA and rebranded them. So to find schematics takes a manual process of looking through several to find a chassis that matches tube sets and physical orientation.

Thanks for responding. The radio that i have needs some internal work and the plastic yellowish front dial cover needs replaced. Where could I get that particular part? Also, what year (era) was this brand made?

You won't find a new replacement dial cover. You might be able to find a parts mule on eBay but I doubt it. If it's just yellowed, I would probably be happy as long as you can still see through it. Just a natural part of aging.

As for dating, you can get an idea from the tube complement. What tubes does it use?

Yes the radio works. I had to replace the actual power cord and do some soldering. As far as the tubes, it has the original Montgomery Ward Airline tubes in it. See, this radio sat in a vacant house for many many years. The lady that owned it died and no-one ever did anything with it until last weekend.

The face on the radio has yellowed. The radio station here in Rawlins (so far the only one that I can get) works on the radio, but the radio has a hum of sorts. Also, maybe you can tell me, there is a yellow (woven insulated) wire that goes from each side of the radio and across the top (inside the component area) and I'm thinking that it may be the antenna, right? Also one good feature, the dial does still light up. I will send some pics of the radio to you via your e-mail.

The hum is most likely a result of the power supply capacitors weakening. I would replace them. They're usually around 20uF, so you can swap them with new polypropylene capacitors. That will solve the hum and that kind of capacitor will last a long, long time.
