My definition:
Get a piece of music you have heard on lots of different systems, and listen on the current system, to see what it sounds like.

Given the dependence on Program material, I cannot imagine ho0w we can do critical listening without being familiar with the PM on different equipment.

I agree with your assessment about vitriol on "other forums".
